Discovering "Normal": A Women's Counseling Group

I lead two "Discovering Normal" groups, one on Wednesdays (6:00-7:30 p.m.) and one on Thursdays (7:15-8:45 p.m.). A Saturday morning group will be forming soon. These groups are for women who grew up in families where the emphasis was on meeting the parents' needs rather than on meeting the children's needs, often because of the parents' alcoholism and/or chronic mental or physical illness. Each group meets in 12-week sessions, accepting new members in the first week of a new session.

The Wednesday group will be open to new members on September 15th; the Thursday group will be open to new members on September 16th.  Please click here if you are interested in joining one of these groups.

Adult Children of Alcoholics

Did you grow up in a family in which the parents' needs were met at the expense of the children's needs?

Do you have issues with control, low self-esteem, and/or perfectionism?

Do you wish you could be "normal?"

If you answered “yes” to these questions, you qualify as an Adult Child of an Alcoholic (ACoA), whether or not you had an alcoholic parent.

When you were growing up, you learned three rules:

Don't talk.
Don't trust.
Don't feel.

At the time, following these rules was a matter of survival. Unfortunately, that survival came at a price. It left you with a host of other problems, such as alcoholism, codependency, depression, anxiety, perfectionism, low self-esteem, and interpersonal problems.

Now that you're an adult, you have a choice. You can do more than just survive. You can learn to break the "Don't talk, don't trust, don't feel" rules.

People who grew up in families in which the parents' needs were met at the expense of the children's needs (often because of parental alcoholism or chronic mental and/or physical illness) sometimes identify themselves as Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoAs), whether or not they had alcoholic parents. If you think you might be one of these people, take an ACoA quiz to find out how you have been affected by growing up in an alcoholic or similarly dysfunctional home.
